Arbutus Rock Residence

This is truly a feature home.  With its many interesting features the landscaping around this residence creates the feeling of privacy while maximizing the sense of an open space by maximizing the amazing views.  A hardwood deck extends out over a pond that creates the feeling of an infinity pool when viewed from the concrete patio at its edge.   While standing at the entrance to this deck from the house the waterfall on your right provides a relaxing sound with its multitude of small tumbles as it works its way down from its beginnings amongst the boulders up above you.  In the evening this, and many of the other interesting features throughout the landscape are lit by soft warm lights from beneath.  This is all setting the stage for the natural gas fire bowl between a couple of chairs overlooking the unobstructed view of the expansive Straight of Georgia and Coastal Mountain range.   Being a couple of hundred feet up you are able to look over everything in front of you and see clearly north to Texada Island and south-east beyond Vancouver.  The many large specimen trees in the back yard provide the feeling of a mature landscape that has been around for years already while the smaller plants will soon fill in the open spaces creating a show of their own.

From here you can follow a concrete path up along the side of the house towards the front.  This is hidden from view of the neighbors by a tall cedar hedge on one side while the other has large clumps of bamboo which provide an interesting scene for people looking out the homes windows.  The stone ground cover gives way to bark mulch covered beds amidst lush plantings creating the feeling that you are entering an area within the forest, away from a river bed or the coast.   Continuing along this path you reach the front of the house.  Between the 2 front pillars for the entrance is a small stone lined pond with a fountain.  The fountain is created by water bubbling out the top of a large stone.  This fountain lights up with a soft white glow as the light dims and provides a central focal point for the main entrance of this amazing house.

If you are just arriving, you will notice that the entrance is framed by large trees and beautiful rocks complementing the natural landscape. The driveway is lined with a narrow border with some interesting dwarf plants on one side with a large red japanese maple and a few conifers on the other.

From front to back this landscape has been designed and constructed by Jim Joslin to create the seamless feeling of transitioning from a lush forest type setting to a coastal beach / riverside setting complementing the amazing unobstructed panoramic view of the coast while creating the feeling of both privacy and openness at the same time.
